The Journey of Jonah is a morality play that dramatizes the biblical tale of Jonah, the reluctant prophet, who defied God’s orders and spent three days in the belly of a whale. God has ordered Jonah to warn the people of Nineveh of their coming destruction, but Jonah refuses because he hates the Ninevites and would rather see them destroyed. So he travels across the sea to Joppa instead, accompanied by various animal guides including a group of birds, a family of rats, a pesky fish, and, of course, a whale. Written in 1967, author Madelaine L’Engle (A Wrinkle in Time), laces light-hearted prose, lyrical poetry and childlike whimsy with profound ancient wisdom. In The Journey of Jonah, we wrestle with the choice of whether to love our enemies or to see them destroyed.
