Behind The Curtain with Seth White, The Play That Goes Wrong

Step behind the curtain with actor Seth White as he shares his journey reprising his role in THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG at Springfield Little Theatre. From the highs of comedic timing to the challenges of live performance, join Seth as he provides a glimpse into the magic and mayhem that make every show a unique adventure!
Role in Springfield Little Theatre’s THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG:
“I play Chris Bean, who is the Director of the show and the head of the Drama Society, playing Inspector Carter in “The Murder at Haversham Manor”, which by the way is the title of the play and I don’t appreciate all of this talk of things going wrong as everything is going swimmingly.”
What drew you to this project?
“I was originally drawn to this play as a fan of the script, The Goes Wrong Show, and the many other ‘goes wrong’ productions. When I saw a chance to be a part of this, I could not pass up the opportunity to audition.”
Why did you leap at the chance to return to the cast this season?
“I remember, being a nightly improviser with Springfield Improv, getting to the end of opening night of THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG last year and thinking, ‘that was amazing, what do you mean we are going to do it again seven more times?’ I was so used to doing Improv shows that occur only once, with their magic of ‘this is the only time we will ever do this or get to be a part of this.’ However, by the third show of The Play That Goes Wrong, I began to dread that we would only get to perform this show a few more times and then it would be over. My fellow cast mates were so talented and so funny that for months after the show I missed it. So when I heard we were going to do the play again and many of the performers would return, I could not wait for it to start.”
What should the audience know?
“As the person who plays Chris Bean, I want the audience to know that no matter what the signs say, or the posters, or even the tickets, the play is called ‘The Murder at Haversham Manor.’ It is a murder mystery and we have worked very hard to put on this play. As someone who loves THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG, I want to say that the audience should arrive early and pay attention throughout the intermission, because there are so many things that go on starting the moment the doors open and continue happening until the curtain falls.”
Have you experienced any memorable real life “goes wrong” stage moments?
“Last season, just following the last rehearsal and just prior to the first show, a designer covered over what appeared to be ‘holes in the set.’ So when it came time for me to run up a nearly vertical piece of scenery and cling to the top of it as I had been rehearsing, I ran up and reached the top only to realize that there were no longer any ‘handholds’ for me as they had been boarded over! So I promptly slid all the way back down to the floor and landed hard on the stage.”
Here’s hoping all that goes wrong is “right” tonight for Seth and the cast of Springfield Little Theatre’s THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG! Thank you, Seth!
