Meet the director of Springfield Little Theatre’s Fiddler on the Roof, Jack Laufer
Jack Laufer has been a professional actor for over 45 years, first based in New York and since 1992 in Los Angeles. He had appeared on stage in both cities as well as regionally across the country, most recently in an Ovation nominated turn as Herr Schultz in La Mirada’s production of Cabaret. He also played Uncle Bill in the West Coast Premier of Sons of the Prophet. On film he played Eddie in the film adaptation of Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers where he co-starred with Mercedes Ruehl, Richard Dreyfuss and Irene Worth. He also had major roles in such films as The Man Who Captured Eichmann, opposite Robert Duval, The Day After Tomorrow, to name a few. On television he was a regular on the Emmy Award winning HUFF for 2 seasons on SHOWTIME. He also recurred as Herb Spleeb on Masters of Sex, also on SHOWTIME for three seasons, as Frank Keller, Don Draper’s accountant, for three seasons on Mad Men. More recently Jack recurred on Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendale’s, The Shrink Next Door and Amazon’s Disjointed. Other guest star roles included Frasier, CSI, Criminal Minds, Castle, Modern Family, (partial list).
For the past several years Jack has been splitting his time between LA and Springfield where he is delighted to be an active member in Springfield’s vibrant theatre scene, having directed Souvenir, Doll’s House 2, and Driving Miss Daisy for SCT and is very thrilled to be making his SLT directing debut with Fiddler on the Roof.
Jack would like to dedicate his work on this project to the memory of his parents who both had to flee their native countries in Europe due to political and religious persecution.
Fiddler on the Roof opens Springfield Little Theatre’s 89th Season. The show plays September 8 – 24, 2023 at the historic Landers Theatre in downtown Springfield, Missouri.
ABOUT THE SHOW
Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty.
Capturing the essential human longings for love, community, success, freedom, family, and meaning, Fiddler on the Roof features iconic songs such as, “Sunrise, Sunset,” the boisterous “If I Were a Rich Man”, and the classic “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.”
